07.29.10: Quirky Quirks

I had a student today in class ask me why I called one of my coworkers "dear" after they drilled me thoroughly on whether or not we were dating. (We're not.) It got me thinking, "I wonder if any of my friends, or others who see me regularly, are ever curious about some of my little quirks?" So, I decided to write this. I figure, if anyone who knows me is actually curious enough to want to know about such things, they're probably curious enough to find and read this blog. So, here goes...

#1.) Why do you call people "dear" all the time?

This one started in high school. My freshman year, there was ONE girl in the senior class. I never spoke to her until the spring when we had One-Act Play together. This was because, first, she was several years my senior, and second, she was considered a bit white trash and slutty by most at the school. However, throughout the process of being in the show with her, some of my opinions of her changed. Yes, both of those original observations still held true, BUT I also got to see how much she genuinely cared about people. One of the things she always did to show endearment was call people "honey" or "dear." It always made me feel special when she did this, and therefore, I picked up the habit in hopes that others would feel the same as I did.

#2.) Why do you tell your friends "I Love You" so much?

I've always been one to be pretty open about my love for others. I've had several people in my life be taken away from me rather suddenly, and that has really affected how I look at my time. Specifically, my sophomore year of college, an ex of mine from high school died in a car wreck. I was never on good terms with him after we broke up, and having him die so suddenly and horrifically without ever making amends hurt me. I made a vow to myself then that when on the phone with family I would always try to say "I Love You" before hanging up, so that if ever something like that should happen to me or someone I love, I will make sure that my last words to them were "I Love You." The same thing goes for friends. I want them to know that I love them and care for them. Why not tell them?

#3.) Why do you wear such weird clothes sometimes?

Quite simple: Because I want to. When I was younger, I was very much obsessed with what colors went with other colors. When I got older, my sister and mother would many times ridicule things that I greatly wanted to wear, but they dismissed as "weird." When I came to college, it was like opening a huge door for me to be (and wear!) what I wanted! And now, I simply just wear what makes me happy. And sometimes, things might not match. And people look at me funny. And that's OK with me, because I'm doing what makes me happy.

#4.) Why do you carry around your laptop everywhere?

Why do you carry around your cellphone everywhere? ANSWER: You like to stay connected. Well, there are so many things I can do on a computer I can't do on a cellphone. I like having that available to me whenever I may choose.

#5.) Why are you always at karaoke?

Another pretty simple one: I like to sing. Yes, I know I'm not great, but at the same time, I'm not completely awful. I think it's fun to go up and put on a little show for others. Plus, I've made a ton of fun and interesting friends up there. Besides, there's nothing more awesome than getting a high five from a drunken chick outside the bathroom telling you how much she loves your skirt and your rendition of Pat Benatar's "HeartBreaker." :D
